Joseph M. Fernando

Joseph M. Fernando is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He obtained his PhD in history from Royal Holloway College, University of London. His main areas of specialization are Malaysian political and constitutional history. He also has a broader interest in British colonialism, Southeast Asian history and Commonwealth constitutional history. He teaches courses on Malaysian political history and the modern history of Southeast Asia at the Department of History in the University of Malaya at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

His publications include The Making of the Malayan Constitution (Kuala Lumpur: Malayan Branch of Royal Asiatic Society, 2002), The Alliance Road to Independence (Kuala Lumpur: University of Malaya Press, 2009) and “British and Commonwealth Legacies in the Framing of the Malayan Constitution, 1956–1957,” in Britain and the World, Vol. 8, No. 2 (2015).
