Stuart Robson

Stuart Robson is a leading specialist in the fields of Old Javanese Language and Literature. He has occupied the position of Senior Lecturer in Javanese at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands (1979–91), Associate Professor of Indonesian at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia (1991–2001), as well as Visiting Professor at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (2014–15). His significant contributions to the advancement of scholarship over the years include a study of the Middle Javanese Pañji kidung Wangbang Wideya (earning him the degree of Doctor of Letters in 1971), collaboration with P.J. Zoetmulder in the preparation of the Old Javanese – English Dictionary (1982), and an English translation of Prapañca’s kakawin Deśawarṇana (1995). In 2019 he won the A.L. Becker “Southeast Asian Literature in Translation” Prize for his publication entitled The Old Javanese Rāmāyaṇa: a New English Translation. Robson is currently Adjunct Professor of Indonesian Studies in the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at Monash University.
