Muhammad Zainiy Uthman
Muhammad Zainiy Uthman is a Professor of Raja Zarith Sofiah Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation (RZS-CASIS), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. He served as the Centre’s Director in January 2014 until December 2016. He obtained his B.Sc, (1986) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (U.S.A.). After having completed his M.A. (1990) from the University of Chicago, he joined the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) in 1991 as Junior Research Fellow at the invitation of Professor al-Attas. Upon the completion of his Ph.D. at ISTAC in 1997, he served as Research Fellow, then Senior Research Fellow. He was Associate Professor and Curator of ISTAC Library from 2003-2002 and was awarded the British Chevening Fellowship (2004-2003) where he spent an academic year at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. In 2006-2005 he returned to Oxford as Visiting Fellow at the same centre.
He translated al-Attas’ “The Meaning and Experience of Happiness in Islam” (ISTAC, 2002) and “The Correct Date of the Terengganu Inscription” (CASIS & HAKIM, 2015) into Malay. With Prof. Dr. Wan Mohd Nor Wan Mohd Nor Wan Daud, Founder and Former Director of CASIS, he co-edited a book entitled Knowledge, Language, Thought and the Civilization of Islam: Essays in Honor of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas (UTM, 2010). The following year, he authored Laṭā’if al-Asrār Li-Ahl Allāh al-Aṭyār of Nūr al-Dīn al-Rānīrī (2011) and edited a book on Batu Bersurat Terenganu: Its Correct Date, Religio-Cultural and Scientific Dimensions (Department of National Heritage, December 2012). A major collected writings entitled Bunga Rampat Bangsa, Kebangsaan dan Patriotsme which he edited and published by Akademi Kenegaraan and CASIS in 2015. He translated Muhammad Taqi Usmani’s Historical Judgment on Riba with Mohd Hilmi Ramli into Malay which is published by CASIS-HAKIM in 2017.
Between 2011 and 2019, he served as the Executive Editor of the CASIS-HAKIM Publication Series, under which 16 books have been published. He has recently been appointed as Distinguished Scholar at Al-Sultan Abdullah Research Centre for History and Civilisation (Al-ASAR), Pahang Museum. His latest works are: Pemikiran dan Tamadun published by AL-ASAR and RZS CASIS (2022) and Al-Attas’ Psychology by HAKIM (2022).
