Martin A. Klein

Martin A. Klein is a Professor Emeritus from the University of Toronto where he taught African history. He is the author of Slavery and Colonial Rule in French West Africa (Cambridge, 1998) and the Dictionary of Slavery and Abolition (Scarecrow, 2002). He is co-editor with Sandra Greene and Alice Bellagamba of African Voices on Slavery and the Slave Trade (Cambridge, 2013) and Bitter Legacy: African Slavery Past and Present (Markus Wiener, 2013). He edited Slavery, Bondage and Emancipation in Modern Asia and Africa (Wisconsin, 1993) and with Clare Robertson, Women and Slavery in Africa (Wisconsin, 1983). He has been President of both the African Studies Association and the Canadian Association of African Studies. In 2002, he received the Distinguished Africanist Award from the African Studies Association.
