Hassan Abdul Muthalib

Hassan Abdul Muthalib, born in 1945, is a self-taught artist, designer, animator, writer and film director. He has been involved in the Malaysian film and animation industry for almost 60 years. Since retiring from active filmmaking, he has been a lecturer at many prestigious universities in Malaysia and overseas and was a Visiting Scholar at Nanyang Technological University’s Art, Design and Media school, Singapore. He has been a frequent jury member at many international film festivals. His research and writings on early Malaysian cinema appear in academic journals and books internationally and has authored three books on Malaysian film and animation. He has a number of local and international awards and conferment for his work, among them: a Jury Award for his first documentary in Jakarta; an Honorary Masters from a local university; Father of Malaysian Animation award presented by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and the Asian Animation Pioneer award from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. In 2018, he received the prestigious Merdeka Award for contributing to the nation in the areas of education and community. He is currently an independent writer and film critic.
