Azhar Ibrahim
Azhar Ibrahim is lecturer at the Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS). He obtained his doctorate and master’s from the same department. His doctoral dissertation focuses on humanism and intellectualism among the Malay literary intelligentsia, while his MA thesis deals with the study of religious orientations as reflected in feudal Malay society and its continuities in the present. He majored in both Malay Studies and Southeast Asian Studies at NUS. He teaches Malay-Indonesian literature and ideologies of development. His research interests include the sociology of religion, the sociology of literature and critical literacy, and Malay-Indonesian intellectual development. Among his published books are Emancipated Education (2019), Historical Imagination and Cultural Responses to Colonialism and Nationalism: A Critical Malay(sian) Perspective (2017), Menyanggah Belenggu Kerancuan Fikiran Masakini (2016), Contemporary Islamic Discourse in the Malay-Indonesia World: Critical Perspectives (2014), and Narrating Presence: Awakening from Cultural Amnesia (2014).

Azhar Ibrahim mendapat ijazah kedoktoran (PhD) dari Universiti Nasional Singapura (NUS), dan pernah melanjutkkan kajian pos-doktoral di Universiti Copenhagen, Denmark dan Universiti Stanford, Amerika Syarikat. Beliau sekarang menjadi Pensyarah bidang sastera Melayu-Indonesia dan ideologi pembangunan di Jabatan Pengajian Melayu, NUS. Selain itu, beliau memegang jawatan Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Sastera di Majlis Bahasa Melayu; dan Panel Penasihat, Perkhidmatan Bahasa Melayu, Lembaga Perpustakaan Negara, Singapura. Antara tumpuan kajiannya ialah sosiologi sastera, teologi sosial agama-agama, pemikiran Islam, literasi kritikal dan perkembangan pemikiran Melayu-Indonesia. Beliau telah menerbitkan hampir 20 buah buku, antaranya Contemporary Islamic Discourse in the Malay-Indonesia World (2014), Cendekiawan Melayu Penyuluh Emansipasi (2014), Bahasa dan Tantangan Intelekiwalisme (2014), Narrating Presence: Awakening from Cultural Amnesia (2014), Utopia Masyarakat Lambak (2015), Syair Kesaksian (2016), Kemanusiaan Sastera: Membangun Wacana Kritis (2017), Historical Imagination and Cultural Responses to Colonialism and Nationalism: A Critical Malay(sian) Perspective (2017), Memikir-ulang Tradisi untuk Pembaharuan (2019) dan Emancipated Education: Essays on the Nurturing of Critical Discowrse (2020).
